 Filter Issues - there is hope! Oct 26, 2008
[Honeywell HCM-800 QuietCare PermaFilter Humidifier
I purchased this humidifier last year, and was happy overall with its performance. The key is keeping the unit clean throughout the season. I used the cleaning cartridges regularly. When I stopped using the humidifier in the spring, I took it apart and cleaned each portion of the unit. Looking at the filter element, I threw it away after trying to clean it, assuming that I would be able to find one in the fall. Wrong! After looking at the posts on this site regarding the filter issues, I took the filter frame and headed to the hardware store to see if I could find an element that would suffice. I purchased a WF815 Protec/Kaz element and after trimming one side and using the trimmed piece, I was able to cover most of the frame area. I have run it for a day, and it seems to perform well. This will allow me to use my HCM 800, and not buy something else (another expense), and replace the element as needed. The original element should never have been marketed as "permanent." With water continually running over it, accumulation of residue is bound to happen. Extracting it from the element destroys it. That is why I tossed it last year! The membrane needs to be of a material that can be cleaned if it to be called "permanent."
I hope the frustrated owners(who posted earlier on this site) return to see this post before they purchase another unit.

I called 800-411-0457 to order a replacement filter for this unit. They told me that the filters are out of stock and would not be available for 3-4 months...then he said AT LEAST 3-4 months. That did not sound promising. He did say I could ship the unit to KAZ and they would ship back a replacement unit...it would just cost $10 for return shipping. Not worth the hassle.
As for the functionality of the unit, it worked well but it is NOT QUIET and the blue/green light is VERY bright.
 Shouldn't a humidifier "humidify"? Jul 20, 2008
I concur with most of the reviews here - it is not quiet, the light is a lot brighter than it should be, and the filter is far from permanent. After a short season, with a few recommended cleanings, the filter is completely packed with minerals and will not come clean. It's nowhere near durable enough to survive a serious cleaning. On top of all that I can't say that I ever felt that it was actually doing what it purports to do. We have a relatively small bedroom (~200 sq ft at most) and even at low humidity settings the unit never turned off (it has a built in hygrometer of sorts that works like a thermostat on an A/C). Whether or not that is an indication, I never felt that the humidity level in the room increased while this unit was on, despite it going through a tank a day. I'll give it a few more weeks before canning it and buying a replacement.

can't buy filters Feb 25, 2008
Be aware that you can't buy filters for this product. If you need a new filter you have to buy a new machine. you can call them at 800-477-0457.

Worst product I have ever purchased Feb 17, 2008
After years of replacing cool-mist filters, I wanted to try a humidifier with a so-called permanent filter. The noise is not really any more bothersome than other cool-mist humidifiers on the market. The problem with this product is the filter system. For the first month or so, I was able to keep the filter clean per the product instructions. But then, as with all cool mist humidifiers, the filter accumulates dust from the air intake and other mineral deposits. Unfortunately, it is absoultely impossible to clean the deposits and debris out of the interior wicking of the filter. The manufacturer's instructions say (in fact warn) only to clean the unit using vinegar...well, that method only works for some of the mineral deposits for the first 4 weeks or so. Plus, even with the vinegar method, you can't get the particles washed out of the interior of the filter! So after 3 months, the perma-filter doesn't retain sufficient moisture to effectively humidify the air. You are better off buying a regular cool-mist humidifier with a filter that can be replaced every few months. It will save you time, money and frustration. I have never written a review of any product before but this product is so poor that I felt compelled to do so at this time and warn others not to make the same mistake I made. This is truly one of the worst products I have ever purchased.
